Jan Kalanda

Construction Management/Development

Jan Kalanda is a 32-year veteran of the hospitality industry with expertise in project (hospitality) development, construction management (owner's representative) and engineering.  He heads-up the construction management and development division of the Morgensheer Hospitality Consortium.

Mr. Kalanda’s career highlights include the successful development and launch of one of the hospitality industry’s most celebrated brands, the Gansevoort Hotel Group.  He was an integral member of the original development team of the Gansevoort Hotel portfolio:  Gansevoort Park Avenue - 2008 – October 2014; Gansevoort Turks and Caicos - 2008- October 2014 and Gansevoort Miami - 2008 to 2009. 

Prior to assuming the position of Vice President of Construction and Development Gansevoort Hotels, Mr. Kalanda was a founding member and Executive Vice President of HK Hotels.  In this role, he directed development, design, pre-opening and ongoing operation of a portfolio consisting of 6 hotel properties:

  • Aria Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic, 2004 to 2008 – 50 rooms rehabilitation

  • Hotel Giraffe, NYC, 1999 to 2008 - 73 rooms, ground up construction and development

  • Library Hotel, NYC, 1999 to 2008 - 60 rooms, complete renovation and repositioning of property from office building to boutique hotel

  • Hotel Casablanca, NYC, 1995 to 2008 - 50 rooms, complete renovation and repositioning of property from rooming house to boutique hotel

  • Hotel Elysee, NYC, 1991 to 2008 - 103 rooms, complete renovation and repositioning of the property to boutique hotel

  • Wales Hotel, NYC, 1989 to 1991 - 100 rooms, complete renovation and repositioning of the property from rooming house to boutique hotel

Prior to HK Hotels, Mr. Kalanda served as Chief Engineer for the Garden City Hotel in Garden City, New York.  In this capacity, Mr. Kalanda oversaw and approved bids on capital projects, contract maintenance, and administrative expenditures.

Mr. Kalanda is a native of the Slovak Republic, and served in the Czechoslovakian Air Force. He holds both EU and American passports.
